Petrosian Leading In Chess At Curacao
Willemstad, CuraƧao, June 24—Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union moved into first place last night in the twenty-seventh and semi-final round of the Candidates' Chess Tournament. He drew his game with Bobby Fischer of the United States on the black side of a Sicilian Defense in thirty-five moves.
The other contender for first place, Paul Keres of the Soviet Union, lost to Pal Benko of the United States today in the resumption of a previously adjourned game.
In the final round, to be played Tuesday, Petrosian faces Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia and Keres faces Fischer. If Petrosian loses, Keres will have to draw to tie for first place; if Petrosian draws, Keres will have to win. If Petrosian wins, Keres will be unable to tie and first place will go to Petrosian.
Dr. Filip lost a Gruenfeld Defense today to Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union. The game between Mikhail Tal and Ewfim Geller, both of the Soviet Union, originally scheduled for this round, was canceled because Tal retired from the tournament as a result of illness.
