Petrosian In Lead In Curacao Chess
Willemstad, CuraƧao, June 17—Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union took the lead in the Candidates' Chess Tournament by defeating his countryman Victor Korchnoi in the twenty-third round.
Petrosian sacrificed two pieces to expose the enemy king and win in twenty-one moves of an English Opening.
Two other games were finished in this round. Bobby Fischer of the United States defeated Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union in a Sicilian Defense going to forty-three moves. Fine maneuvering by Fischer netted a strong passed queen bishop pawn and two rooks for his opponent's queen. The advance of the pawn could not be checked, and Geller resigned.
Pal Benko of the United States and Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia split the point in a Semi-Tarrasch Defense going to thirty-three moves.
The game between Paul Keres and Mikhail Tal, both of the Soviet Union was postponed because of Tal's illness.
