Korchnoi Drops In Chess Tourney
Blunders in Fischer Game and Loses First Place
Willemstad, CuraƧao, May 21—A blunder in a winning position in the twelfth round against Bobby Fischer of the United States yesterday cost Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union the lead in the Candidates' Chess Tournament. With a pawn ahead in a King's Indian Defense lasting forty-four moves, Korchnoi overlooked a piece and lost the game.
Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union advanced to first place after an uneventful draw with his countryman Paul Keres in a Tarrasch Variation of the Queen's Gambit lasting eighteen moves.
Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, on the black side of a Sicilian Defense, administered the sixth defeat to ex-world champion Mikhail Tal of the Soviet union in thirty-nine moves. A risky sacrifice of the exchange led to an attack that Tal, in time pressure, was unable to stave off.
Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union and Pal Benko of the United States drew a Grunfeld Defense in twenty-three moves. Each player sacrificed the exchange during the lively complications.
