Keres Strengthens Hold On Chess Lead
Willemstad, CuraƧao, June 3 — Paul Keres of the Soviet Union strengthened his lead in the Candidates' Chess Tournament today by defeating his countryman Mikhail Tal on the black side of a Ruy Lopez in forty-one moves. Fine combinative play by the Estonian grand master netted two pawns and a superior position in the sixteenth-round game.
Pal Benko of the United States defeated Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia on the black side of Saemisch Variation of the King's Indian Defense in forty-one moves. An interesting sortie by Benko creation complications netting him a rook.
Two other games in this round were adjourned. Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union and Bobby Fischer of the United States suspended play of a Sicilian Defense after forty-four moves. At the time of adjournment, Fischer had a bishop and pawn for his opponent's rook, but the position of his men gave him a slight advantage.
Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union adjourned a Ruy Lopez against Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union after forty two moves. Korchnoi had a positional advantage at the time of adjournment.
