Fischer Tops Benko; Tal Loses 5th Game
Willemstad, CuraƧao, May 14—All four games were decided in the eighth round of the Candidates' Chess Tournament. Bobby Fischer, playing the white side of a French defense, defeated Pal Benko of the United States in thirty-nine moves. Fischer, gaining a pawn, won a rook-and-pawn ending.
Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union, ex-world champion, lost his fifth game. Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union defeated him in twenty moves of a French defense. Tal, striving for originality, blundered badly.
Paul Keres of the Soviet Union, playing the black side of a Queen's Gambit Accepted, defeated Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia. Exerting positional pressure, he won in thirty-nine moves.
Ewfim Geller and Victor Korchnoi, both of the Soviet Union, drew an uneventful Ruy Lopez in twenty moves.
