Willemstad, Curacao —(AP)—Bobby Fischer, the American teenager, and Mikhail Tal, Russia's former world champion, both are off to a slow start in the 1962 Candidates Chess tournament.
Eight grand masters are competing in a round robin for the right to meet Mikhail Botvinnik of the Soviet Union for the world championship next year.
In yesterday's action, Fischer appeared on the edge of defeat in his match against Ewfim Geller of Russia. The game was called on the 41st move, with the Russian apparently in the stronger position.
Both players were left with bishops and two passed pawns but Geller's players were farther advanced.
Tal was beaten by his fellow countryman, Paul Keres, in a complicated match that last 41 moves.
