Fischer, Reshevsky In U.S. Championship Play
What promises to be the strongest tournament ever held for the U.S. Chess Championship will take place at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York from Dec. 16 to Jan. 3.
Of greatest interest will be the confrontation of two former titleholders. Bobby Fischer and Samuel Reshevsky, for the first time since their ill-fated match in the summer of 1961.
Reshevsky first won the championship in 1936 and held it for most of the period up to 1957. That year Fischer, not yet 15, won the tournament in brilliant style and went on to four straight triumphs without loss of a single game.
Reshevsky dropped back from second place in 1957 to a tie for fourth in the 1960 event. Neither he nor Fischer participated last year. Larry Evans, current defending champion, won out against a relatively weak field. He will be out to repeat this time, but against much greater odds.
Others who have accepted invitations to the tournament are Pal Benko, Arthur Bisguier, Robert Byrne, Edmar Mednis and Nicholas Rossolimo of New York, Hans Berliner of Washington, D.C. and Robert Steinmeyer of St. Louis. A total of 12 will participate in round-robin play.
In addition to the championship title the winner will receive the first prize of $2,000 and custody of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy. The three leaders will qualify for the Interzonal Tournament, stepping stone for the next world championship match.
