Fischer Nearing Tourney Victory
Brooklyn Youth Leads by 2 Points With 3 Rounds Left
Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn played a twenty-four-move draw in the twentieth round of the world interzonal chess tournament and then gained a full point when Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union resigned their unfinished nineteenth-round match without resuming play, according to a report from the Swedish capital yesterday.
With three rounds to go and a score of 15—4, the youthful grandmaster is conceded to be almost certain of capturing first place.
Fischer had the black pieces against Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia and set up a King's Indian defense. The former United States champion forced an exchange of queens and the players agreed to split the point.
