Fischer disappointed by drawn ending against Botvinnik 09 Oct 1962, Tue The Guardian (London, Greater London, England) Newspapers.comFischer disappointed by drawn ending against Botvinnik
Botvinnik drew his unfinished game against Bobby Fischer after eight hours' play and 63 moves in the World Chess Team Championship today. Fischer, who had confidently forecast during the adjournment that eh would beat the world champion, appeared greatly disappointed on reach a drawn ending of rook and two rooks pawns against rook and bishop pawn and left the tournament hall immediately the draw was agreed.
The American team attributed Fischer's failure to win to a weak sealed move at the adjournment. However, Botvinnik told me after the game that the Russian analysts could not find a win even with the best play by Black. According to the world champion, Fischer had a clear win some moves before the adjournment but then went wrong. The famed Russian resourcefulness in adjournment analysis played a big part in saving the game. One of the Soviet grandmasters, Geller, stayed up all night analyzing the ending.
As Byrne and Tal agreed their unfinished game draw without resuming play, the Soviet Union defeated the United States two and half to one and half and are virtually sure of winning the world title for the sixth time running.
