Fischer Awaiting Chess Showdown
U.S. Ace, Now 19, to Meet 7 in Challengers' Tourney
Preparations are under way for the challengers' world chess tournament in CuraƧao, Netherlands Antilles, scheduled to open May 1 at the Hotel Intercontinental.
The chief umpire will be Dr. M. Acosta Silva of Venezuela. The tournament director will be M. de Graaf of the Netherlands.
Eight grandmasters, representing three countries, will participate. They include Bobby Fischer and Pal Benko of the United States; Ewfim Geller, Tigran Petrosian and Viktor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union and Dr. Miroslva Filip of Czechoslovakia. They earned their places in the recent interzonal tournament in Stockholm.
Tal and Keres Qualify
Mikhail Tal, a former world champion, and Paul Keres, seeded by the International Chess Federation, will be the other competitors. This event will precede the final in the series leading to the world championship, now held by Mikhail Botvinnik of the Soviet Union.
Fischer, who became 19 years old on March 9, is eager for the showdown. At Stockholm, he won thirteen games and drew nine for a score of 17½-4½ and led the field of twenty-three.
He led his nearest rival there by 2½ points. He won 6 points in the first seven matches, 6 in the next seven and 5½ in the final eight.
