First Meeting
The first encounter between world champion Botvinnik and the young American genius Bobby Fischer was the most important of the team championship at Varna; interest was heightened by Fischer's disparaging remarks about Botvinnik's playing strength. The game, reflecting the tension and prestige at stake, is uneven; Botvinnik, caught in his own trap by unsound prepared analysis, recovers when the over-confident American fails badly in a winning ending. The notes are based on Botvinnik's own interesting and full commentary in the American magazine “Chess Life.”
