Filip Plays Draw But Retains Lead
Splits Point With Olafsson in Chess at Stockholm
Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, still undefeated, drew with Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland in the fourth round of the interzonal chess tournament at Stockholm, according to a report from the Swedish capital yesterday.
The masters agreed to divide the point after twenty moves had been recorded. Filip now has a score of 3½—½ and is 1 point ahead of the field.
Pal Benko, United States; Arturo Pomar, Spain; M. Schweber, Argentina, and Wolfgang Uhlmann of East Germany are bracketed at 2½—1½.
Benko played a draw with Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia in the Sicilian defense which lasted only fourteen moves, the shortest game of the round.
Pomar defeated Manuel Aaron of India on the white side of a King's Indian defense in twenty-nine moves. Abe Yanofsky of Canada gained the verdict over Uhlmann after forty moves of a French defense.
The other victor in yesterday's round was Schweber, who beat Rudolph Teschner, East Germany, in forty-eight moves.
Bobby Fischer, a former United States champion, adjourned a Caro-Kann defense adopted by Lajos Portisch of Hungary. At the end of the five-hour session a rook ending with even pawns was reached with Fischer having a slight advantage.
The other United States representative, Arthur B. Bisguier, drew with Istvan Bilek of Hungary and resigned his unfinished third-round game with Lajos Portisch of Hungary without resuming play.
