Early Returns 09 May 1962, Wed Courier-Post (Camden, New Jersey) Newspapers.comEarly returns from the International Candidates' Tournament at Curacao are little short of shocking. America's Bobby Fischer lost two of his first three games and hard a third, against Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, in adjournment.
Pal Benko of the United States, who beat Fischer in the first round, was the first player to score two victories, but also had lost one. Recent world's champion Mikhail Tal of Russia lost three of his initial matches!
Geller, Keres, and Petrosian of Russia had identical marks of one victory and two draws; Filip's record was one win and one draw; Korchnoi of Russia had three draws.
With each player meeting the other four times, early results in this event do not mean as much as they otherwise might, yet it is odd to see Tal and Fischer at the bottom of a standing, rather than the top, even at this stage.
