Cuellar And Filip Share Chess Lead
Benko Beats Bisguier, Draws With Fischer in Sweden
Miguel Cuellar of Colombia and Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia shared first place with scores of 2—0 in the interzonal chess tournament at Stockholm, according to a report from Swedish capital yesterday.
Gideon Barcza of Hungary, Pal Benko of the United States, Julio Bolbochan and M. Schwebert of Argentina, Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union and Wolfgang Uhlmann of East Germany had scores of 1½—½ each.
Cuellar defeated Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union in an unfinished second-round game. Continuously attacking in a rook and queen ending, the Columbian won in fifty-six moves. Dr. Filip gained a point at the expense of E. German of Argentina after forty-eight moves of a Sicilian defense.
Of the three United States representatives, Benko of New York made the biggest gain. First he defeated Arthur B. Bisguier, another New Yorker, without resuming play and then sat down with Bobby Fischer, the former United States champion. After fifty-five moves of a bishop vs. knight ending, a draw was recorded.
Fischer gained a half point when Rudolph Teschner of East Germany agreed to halve the point in their unfinished first-round game without further play. Bisguier won his adjourned game with Manuel Aaron of India after sixty-seven moves of a King's Indian defense.
