Chess Play Opens In Curacao May 1
Fischer and Benko Among 8 in Candidates' Tourney
In the play-off to break the triple tie for sixth place in the interzonal tournament at Stockholm among Leonid Stein of the Soviet Union, Pal Benko of the United States, and Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia, Stein made the top score of 3—1. The Soviet player won two games and drew two.
Benko placed second with 2½—1½, and qualified for the candidates' tournament, scheduled to start on May 1 in Curacao, Dutch West Indies. Gligoric, in poor form, drew one game and lost three for totals of ½—3½.
Stein was eliminated from the competition by a ruling of the International Chess Federation that the list of the first six players in the interzonal contain not more than three from any one country.
However, Stein is a first reserve, to replace any of the Russians who may not be able to play in the candidates' tournament, the winner of which will meet Mikhail Botvinnik for the world title.
A four-game match to determine the second reserve is under way between Lajos Portisch of Hungary and Wolfgang Uhlmann of East Germany. The first game was drawn.
The qualifiers are Bobby Fischer and Pal Benko, United States; Mikhail Tal, Paul Keres, Ewfim Geller, Victor Korchnoi, Tigran Petrosian, Soviet Union; Dr. Miroslav Filip, Czechoslovakia.
Following is another selection of games from the interzonal tournament.
