Speaking of Chess 14 Oct 1962, Sun Sunday Gazette-Mail (Charleston, West Virginia) Newspapers.comThe United States chess team finished two notches behind their last effort (1960) in the Chess Olympics. The 1962 world team tournament, held at Varna, Bulgaria, was captured by the Russian team with a game score of 31½ to 12½. Yugoslavia ended in second position with 28 to 16, two points better than third-place Argentina. The USA followed with 25 to 19, losing 3 to 1 to Yugoslavia in the eleventh and final round. But the big match for the Americans was their semi-final round meeting with the USSR, with the latter scoring a one-point 2½ to 1½ victory.
Had Bobby Fischer capitalized on his superior position versus Mikhail Botvinnik at first board the match would have been drawn. But Bobby failed to find the best continuation and the wily World Champion escaped with a draw. Benko and Dr. Byrne drew at second and fourth boards, respectively, against Petrosian and Tal, but Evans lost to Spassky at third board.
