This year's Russian championship, held at Baku, was one of the strongest in recent years and consequently an impressive victory for 24-year-old Boris Spassky. It was his first in this event. He won the world junior in 1956. Polugaevsky's second place provided the surprise as he had not previously impressed. Bronstein may be on the way to recovering his once brilliant form. Tal and Keres tried the strong man act, competing again so soon after the Bled international. This may have been one of the reasons why Fischer declined to play in the USA championship.

Larry Evans, N.Y. won the American championship, 7½-3½ points, ahead of Robert Byrne, Indianapolis, 7-4; P. Benko, J. Sherwin and H. Seidman, 6½-4½ each, etc. Evans, who had previously won the title in 1951, won four games and drew seven.
