Bobby Fischer Skips Mar del Plata Argentina International Tournament 04 Apr 1962, Wed Courier-Post (Camden, New Jersey) Newspapers.comBobby Fischer had been scheduled to play in the international tournament now under way at Mar del Plata, Argentina, but wisely decided to skip it after his brilliant showing in finishing first in the interzonal at Stockholm. The eight-man candidates' tourney that will decide the man to face Mikhail Botvinnik for his world title next year is to begin May 1 at Curacao. The Mar del Plata event will not finish till April 13.
Fischer thus can take a short rest prior to the tournament that means so much more to him, at Curacao. It is a grueling event lasting 60 days, with each of the eight contestants meeting the other four times. Pal Benko, the other American who qualified at Stockholm for Curacao, also decided to pass up Mar del Plata and like Fischer, will spend the rest of April resting and studying.
Here is the game between Fischer and the Russian ace Korchnoi at Stockholm, won by the American.
