The challengers tournament at Curacao, Dutch West Indies, is over. Tigran Petrosian (17½ to 9½) won this important event, thus assuring yet another all-Soviet world championship chess match.
After Bobby Fischer's outstanding performances in the recent candidates tourney at Stockholm, there were many in the Free World who hoped this young American would break the strangle-hold Soviet chess had on the world chess crown.
But it was not to be—not in 1962. Fischer's 14 to 13 record was only good enough for fourth position. Two other Russian representatives, Paul Keres and Ewfim Geller, tied for second place with 17-10 records.
Still Fischer did better than he did in the previous challengers tournament and at his age he should have many more years of chess ahead of him. He did win eight games outright; only Keres did better in this respect and only Petrosian did as well. (Petrosian, alone, had no losses, while Fischer lost seven games.)
