At the age of 18, Bobby Fischer won a sensationally clearcut victory in the world interzonal chess tournament in Stockholm the other day. His chief competition came from the Soviet Union, where great emphasis is put on chess.
Bobby was the youngest player in the field. At 15, he became the youngest grand master in history.
A Brooklynite, young Fischer is single-minded in his devotion to the royal game. He is the best—and indeed the only”chance the United States has of unseating the international champion, Mikhail Botvinnik of the USSR.
His exploits will never attract such mass adulation as is accorded a Roger Maris, a Johnny Unitas or a Bob Cousy. But he is a tremendously gifted young man, and just now is his country's premier representative in a highly specialized form of peaceful international competition. It's a shame he remains an unknown figure so far as most Americans are concerned.
