Speaking Of Chess 30 Sep 1962, Sun Sunday Gazette-Mail (Charleston, West Virginia) Newspapers.comIn the 1962 Chess Olympics at Varna, Bulgaria, the United States team qualified from its preliminary section B topping its group with a 20 to 4 game score. The other two teams winning the right to play in the championship finals were Rumania and Bulgaria, each with 18 to 6.
There had been some question as whether or not Pal Benko would play on the American team, but he is competing for his new country (he is a naturalized Hungarian) and joins the others: Bobby Fischer, U.S. Champion Larry Evans, Donald and Robert Byrne, and Edmar Mednis. Eliot Hearst is acting as non-playing captain of the U.S. team.
